Mobile technology and Shared Spaces can provide an effective means for fostering collaboration in your classroom. This site will allow you to explore the use of Shared Space through mobile technology to promote collaboration, while at the same time providing you with the knowledge and resources to then integrate them into your classroom. You'll need the following elements to succeed...
Prerequisites
Before you can begin to integrate mobile technology into your classroom, you must first be able to decide on a content focus for the day. Use your state mandated guidelines or course content map to help you do this. You must also be able to develop and implement a lesson plan addressing the chosen content focus. Click here for more information on how to develop and implement an effective lesson plan.
Shared Spaces & Collaboration
To get started, you will need a basic understanding of shared space and collaboration. We introduce you to the idea of shared spaces as a means for collaboration, one of the 4 Cs of 21st Century Learning. There are a number of ways to collaborate, but a very exciting way is through the use of mobile technology to access a shared workspace. This shared space might be a virtual whiteboard where everyone can share their ideas or it might be a presentation tool that everyone can edit together. Click here for more information on shared space.
Formal / informal
Once you are comfortable with what shared space might mean for your classroom, we provide some examples of formal uses of shared space and technology. Formal uses are ones you plan your whole lesson or even unit around. Planning a whole lesson around mobile technology and shared spaces can be intimidating. Don't worry! We also examine some informal uses to help you get more comfortable. Informal uses are quick activities that might open a lesson, close a lesson, or be useful for formative assessment. Click here for more information on formal/informal uses of shared space.
Resources
Now that you have a good understanding of collaboration through the use of mobile technology and shared space, we want to provide you with some places to start in your own lesson planning. We provide overviews of various shared space tools that we think could be appropriately applied in your classroom, and because classes that integrate mobile technology can look so different, both in terms of composition and technology, we deliberately focus on free tools that are accessible through a basic web browser and less on mobile apps. Finally, for those of you with more challenging subject areas, we provide a list of content specific ideas for integrating mobile technology and shared space in the classroom.
Good luck!
